Aurora oval forecast map

Real-time aurora oval prediction from NOAA OVATION model

How to Read the Aurora Map

Aurora Oval Colors

The colored regions on the map represent predicted aurora intensity:

  • Green: Possible aurora visibility
  • Yellow: Likely aurora activity
  • Red: Strong aurora expected

The brighter the color, the stronger the expected aurora display.

OVATION Model

The Ovation Prime model predicts aurora locations based on:

  • Current solar wind conditions
  • Interplanetary magnetic field
  • Particle precipitation patterns
  • Historical aurora observations

Maps update every 30 minutes with latest NOAA data.

Best Viewing Times

Aurora is typically most visible:

  • Between 10 PM and 2 AM local time
  • During geomagnetic storms (high KP index)
  • In dark sky locations away from light pollution
  • On clear nights with minimal cloud cover

Use the probability calculator to check your specific location, or monitor solar activity levels for early warning of upcoming aurora events.
